When Thanos snapped his fingers, most of the other heroes disintegrated within just a few seconds. But Spider-Man managed to hold on for nearly 30 seconds. Apparently, this was intentional on the directors’ part—the scene was meant to show Peter Parker using his healing factor and his incredible physical abilities to resist the Snap with every fiber of his being.

I had always thought it was simply a directing choice to make Spider-Man disappear later so that he could convey those emotions, or perhaps that it was some kind of subconscious power, similar to when Doctor Strange astrally projected himself. But realizing that Peter was actually using every ability he had to resist death is both incredibly shocking and unbelievably cool. He really is the friendly neighborhood hero.

While the other heroes disappear before they can even fully understand what is happening, Peter senses the threat coming through his Spider-Sense even before the Snap’s power reaches him. Yet he still has no idea what the threat actually is, and he is completely helpless against it. How do you even put into words that feeling of frustration, despair, and absolute helplessness?

They say a masterpiece remains a masterpiece no matter how many times you watch it again.

I think this is exactly what they mean.

But at a time when Marvel has been receiving criticism that “Marvel died along with Robert Downey Jr.,” perhaps now is the time for Marvel to prove that it is still alive.

Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom in Doomsday, and the return of my very first hero, Tobey Maguire—I’m genuinely looking forward to it.

Tobey Maguire could show us the most Spider-Man-like and powerful version of the character we have ever seen in a Marvel movie: the original organic web-shooters, along with the incredible strength that allowed him to stop a moving train!

And if the X-Men are really involved as well, that would truly be the icing on the cake.

Bringing together different universes and timelines and then making everything explode into one huge spectacle—that is exactly the kind of thing I love.
